Barnardo's Brass Appeal

Barnardo's Brass is a unique fund-raising initiative that aims to unite the musical heritage of one of the UK's largest childrens’ charities with the brass band movement throughout Britain.

Barnardo's Brass presents a unique opportunity to display, possibly for the first time, the combined charitable fund-raising commitment of brass bands throughout Britain, which, although it has always been strong, may until now have gone somewhat unnoticed.

Dr. Thomas Barnardo was a true visionary in his acknowledgement of the benefits that music training and music making could bring to the young and deprived children in his homes. Today it is generally accepted as a means of developing the potential of all children whatever their background.

Historic archives show that Barnardo’s Homes originally located in East London had several marching bands, which played for the local community and on special occasions. The more talented musicians were chosen and formed into smaller ensembles called “Musical Boys”. They travelled throughout the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries raising much needed funds.

Creating new opportunities for up and coming instrumentalists of the future is our priority, and to date many young musicians have played an important part in or attended for free, a series of concerts that feature the very best soloists and Championship brass bands from their region.

This opportunity to share their talents with a growing and supportive audience we believe is a life changing experience and we hope will motivate each individual to reach their full potential.

Music making offers much more than the enjoyment gained from performing to others; it is a life-long passport that enables the individual to meet new friends and provide life-enhancing opportunities.
